QTA Celebrates International Women’s Day

The 2018 QTA International Women’s Day #PressforProgress events were celebrated with over 300 guests at functions in Brisbane and Townsville.  Each year we focus on sharing the depth of experience of women in the transport and logistics industry and this year, we invited three inspiring women who shared honest and authentic accounts of their life events and reflections.  Our MC for the events was our very own Lisa Acret, Membership Service Manager who managed to keep the audience entertained with a mix of insightful reflections and humour during the morning.  LIsa acknowledged that the gender balance in the industry was looking very good if the gender split in the audience was any indication.

Belinda’s message came through loud and clear – take every opportunity that is presented to you and work your butt off!

MICHELLE BLACK – Flight Retrieval Nurse, Nurse Manager, Lifeflight.
For more than 20 years, Michelle worked in the intensive care ward and emergency department at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.  There wasn’t too much she didn’t experience while working there, including caring for some of the 2005 Bali bombing victims.  After suffering an unimaginable loss, Michelle’s career ambitions changed.  Her search lead her into the world of transport and logistics of a very different kind, transporting the most precious cargo – human life.  It was here she found her next calling.  What she didn’t consider was the difference in the gender balance in her new role.  She met these challenges head on and her experience and professionalism earned the much deserved respect of her peers in the flight retrieval unit.  A vibrant and energetic person, Michelle left us all inspired by her strength, dedication and resilience.  Michelle believes that progress in life is up to you – don’t wait for things to come to you, go out and find what you want and do it!

MELISSA TAYLOR – Managing Director, Taylor’s Removals, Toowoomba
2015 QTA Trucking Woman of the Year, 2016 Australian Trucking Woman of the Year

Melissa is a well accomplished and successful business woman.  She is the first female in the Taylor family to work in the business – which is celebrating its centenary year this year.  The oldest of four girls, Melissa’s early career followed her passion for fashion and glamour but her heart was also in Toowoomba.  So Melissa carefully constructed a business proposal of pro’s and con’s and presented to her father Ray to consider.  Well the decision was positive and Melissa is now leading this 100 year old family business. From challenging traditions to introducing a new style, Melissa is now leading this iconic Darling Downs business and along with it, has brought a bit of ‘Devil Wears Prada’ style into the trucking industry.  Melissa strongly believes that more women need to be represented on boards to provide balance, in not only gender, but in knowledge, conversation and thought processes.  She encouraged our guests to put themselves forward and contribute to leading this great industry.
